I will be visiting Austin and College station to visit UT and A&M From Wednesday, Oct. 16th, to Saturday October 19th. I will be in Austin Wednesday evening, and tour UT from 10:30 to 1pm. After that I am free to meet-up with anyone who is willing for dinner or anything. Anyone who is in their engineering program I would love to talk to. I will be visiting College station and A&M from 10:30am to ~4:30pm on Friday. I am going to be in contact with the A&M Sports Car Club, and see if i could meet with some members. I would be heading back to the hotel in Austin at around 8pm. Saturday i have no plans at all and would be free to do anything.

Recommendations for food (Read: barbecue) would be great because I've always wanted to try some real Texas BBQ. Any other recommended visits would be great too!

Be sure to hunt out their FSAE teams. A&M has a pretty successful team. UT's team is less successful, but would still be worth checking out.

I'm heading back to Austin tomorrow, and I know many engineers in town. Also jalop-level car people. I should be home Tuesday.

If you want good BBQ skip the tour at UT and go to Franklins. You'll need to be in line by 10am and they'll be sold out long before 1pm. Best BBQ on the planet.

ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY PLAY VAN HALEN INSTEAD OF PANTERA

WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE I WOULD LISTEN TO PANTERA IN THE CAR WITH MY PARENTS, THEY WERE FINE WITH IT.

I set up a time with one of the FSAE guys at A&M, he said they would be developing the suspension the Friday I am there and that he would give me a tour around the shop. I'm extremely excited.

As far as barbeque goes, I second Franklin's in Austin. It's a bit of a pain, but it's an experience and it is the real fucking deal. There are many other places around Austin that make very good barbeque, but Franklin is the tops unless you want to drive out west of the track to Lockhart for what is really the home and pinnacle of Texas barbeque.

Disaster! I'll be out of town the entire week, so I can't take you on a tour of the ME building at UT.

I don't know what kind of engineering you're interested in, but I'd definitely recommend shooting an email to one or more of the people on the leadership teams of the relevant societies at UT/A&M (e.g. ASME, IEEE, AIChE). They might be able to take you on a tour of labs/facilities in their department, or you might be able to go to one of their meetings. Also email the guys on the FSAE team. They usually work on Saturdays, and if you come to the building when they're working, the loading dock will look like a hastily assembled C&C. IDK about this year but in the past I've seen an STI, BRZ, RX8, FB RX7, a couple different M cars, etc. UT also has some kind of car club, but I don't know much about it.

Don't be put off by the ugly engineering buildings. Depending on when you'll be starting, one or more of them will be replaced, starting with the EE building, which is about to be torn down and replaced by the EERC .

UT has a 1 MW nuclear reactor. Does A&M have a nuclear reactor? (Yes, they do, and it's also 1 MW, but ours is a TRIGA Mark II, and theirs is only a Mark I.)

And if you still are crazy enough to think A&M might be better than UT, consider: F1, Moto GP, ALMS, SXSW, ACL, Fun Fun Fun Fest, all the music you could ever want to see live, tons of awesome bars and coffee shops, breakfast tacos (!), and the best BBQ places in the state. None of that describes College Station.

I'll be studying ME for sure. I'm already gpoing to be meeting up with A&M's FSAE team and possibly their Sports car club.

This UT vs A&M thing needs to stop. Seriously. Austin is bigger than College station, yes, but I'd never be more than an hour and a half away from COTA, plus CS has Texas World Speedway, which hosts track days more often. A&M also has a more successful FSAE team, and it's 15 grand cheaper per year for tuition for out of state students.

Feel free to email me at ryan at my username dot com. Good friend of mine is a UT engineering grad and the type of guy who goes to Dubai on vacation and rents an r8 v10. I'm sure conversation wouldn't be difficult.

I actually should have framed that statement as "if you think College Station might be more interesting than Austin." I couldn't care less about A&M v. UT, really. I only think Austin offers a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities that have nothing to do with the university, which is great, but might be more relevant to a grad student than an undergrad.

In any case, if you aren't able to get in touch with students in those groups, feel free to let me know and I'll see if I can do anything to help.
